A Long Way Down

A Long Way Down

'An in-depth study of stockbrokers- interestingly, the more they earned, the more likely they were to have high levels of anxiety and feel lonely. On average they spent twelve hours a day at work; daily, they smoked nearly two packs of cigarettes, consuming both alcohol and some form of illegal substance' (James,2007) 'A Long Way Down' is a surreal examination into the issue of 'Status Anxiety' taking a look at five employees of the 'General National Bank'. This piece of live dance theatre explores how the drive for success and status can engulf a person's existence. Taking a look at a world where 16-hour days are routine, human relationships are neglected, used only for the functional purpose of pro-creation or to improve status. 'A Long Way Down' looks at a society that is based on the belief that only success brings happiness. Directed and choreographed by Jess McCormack and Kitty Smith Set and Lighting design by Sarah Neale Music mixed and edited by Stacey Dorling Dancers: Eleana Alexandrou, Kitty Smith, Jess McCormack, Sarah Neale and Stacey Dorling. Performed at Cloud Dance Festival on 5 July 2008.
